The Review:

Charles Brown’s latest release, “Journey In A New Land” was sent to me from out of nowhere. Aside from the information given to me, I really had no clue who he was or what to expect musically. Upon first listen I found the music to be a very enjoyable mix instrumental progressive and melodic rock along with some spacey synth moments. Unlike other guitar based instrumental albums, Charles playing seems to be focused away from the typical shred-fest and relies more on melodic composing.

Of the five tracks, three are over the ten minute mark contain a mix of guitar and synthesizer textures. Thus giving moments of rock and ambient in the same space. Which seems to stay clear of crossing over into a new-age sound. The two shorter tracks are quite different than the previous ones, where one explores an ambient path and the final track explores a country/western style. Charles Brown indeed has the chops to keep him miles above the typical guitar god. He can combine both a technical and melodic side that should get him some attention he truly deserves.
