The Review:

Drift is a new progressive rock band from New Jersey. The band consists of Jack Blair (lead vocals/keyboards/guitars), Steve Gio (bass/backing vocals), Evan Jacobson (drums/backing vocals) and Dave Scags (Electric & 12 string guitars/backing vocals).Their debut album, Driftsongs, contains 6 tracks which range from 4 to 12 minutes. Overall it clocks in at just under 43 minutes, which is the perfect length in my opinion..

The band sites influences ranging from early Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, UK and Porcupine Tree. There is also a slight punk attitude on the album, especially on the last two tracks. The epic of the album, “The Audition Room” has a familiar sound to it which makes listeners feel comfortable. I hear all their influences on this song. It’s also my favorite off the album along side Also the vocals remind me of Ray Davies, which to me gives the band a fresh sound in the se of sound-a-likes.

In closing, I found Driftsongs one of the better D.I.Y. progressive rock bands who deserve more exposure. They have much promise to be a household name within the fans of the genre. This is a very recommended release of 2009
