The Review:

This was a tough one for me to digest but happily so. Laser’s Edge reissue series latest release is Secret Oyster’s Vidunderlige Kaelling, which is the first of six titles to be reissued from the Danish jazz-rock ensemble Secret Oyster. Members of Secret Oyster feature former members of Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe, Coronarias Dans and Hurdy Gurdy (Unfortunately for me, I have never heard of these bands). Vidunderlige Kaelling, Secret Oyster’s third album (originally released in 1976 in the United States as Astarte), is the musical accompaniment to an erotic ballet of the same name.

The music runs through various styles such as progressive fusion, dark sounding orchestral, spacey, and funk-rock. After a few listens, I can say that, this music will appeal to fans of Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever to name a few. This is one of those releases that can be either a hit or miss, but true music fans will appreciate it’s beauty even if it takes several listens to get to that point. Laser’s Edge will be releasing more Secret Oyster albums soon. So if you’re an older fan of the vinyal age or a new one like me, you’ll be anxiously awaiting them.
