The Review:

In A World is basically a duo of male and female singer-songwriters who incorporate two different world of music, the dark brooding gothic and film score. Together these two genres create a new one that has been explored in different ways by bands such as Karda Estra, Ghosts of Pompeii and Nox Arcana. The only differences is those are instrumental versions where as In A World is vocal based by members Nicole Buetti and Dirk Montapert. Recently, I reunited with Dirk after over a decade of being apart. We were very good friends back in my home town and like most things in life we drifted apart around the mid 1990’s. Thanks in part to the internet, most importantly MySpace, Dirk found me.

Dirk is a native of Southern California and listened to a healthy dose of various styles of the music such as The Beatles, Queen, Bowie, 70's Prog Rock, Depeche Mode and The Cure. Nicole, a native of Colorado had a different expose to music on the classical and film score side of such artists as Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky, John Williams, David Arnold, and Michael Kamen. Together, these two bring their worlds together into a unique fresh ‘progressive’ look on music. In many ways, they are 'progressive', maybe not like the classic 70's but forward thinking just like that era gave us.

According to their website, the first song they wrote together was, Numb, which happened by accident. The end result was so perfect they instantly realized the nucleus of what was to become, In A World.

I believe labels limit an artist‘s work but "Pop-Noir" is a basic description of In A World‘s music but there‘s so much more. You really have to hear for yourself to make up your own mind. Each song, in my opinion, connects with the next and should be viewed as a body of work rather than individual songs.
